Giving Yourself a Pay Raise
Now that we’ve talked about various ways you can pull targeted traffic to your site, there’s something else you need to know: how to test, track and tweak. Once you know how to do this, you can give yourself a pay raise almost any time you want.
Tracking means that you track everything about your marketing campaign: from the sales copy you use on your web page, to the keywords you use in the search engines and PPC search engines, to the wording of your advertisements, to where your ads are appearing.
But here’s the key: you can only test one element of your campaign at once, otherwise you won’t know what’s causing the change. For example, you can test the headline of your sales letter AND your traffic sources at the same time (unless you use multi-variate testing, but that’s for experienced marketers and statisticians).
Instead, choose just one thing to test, and then hold everything else constant. For example, you can track to see which gives you better results in your email marketing efforts by sending half your list one email, and half your list a different advertisement (perhaps the only thing different being something like the headline).
Then hold everything else constant so that you know any changes you see are attributable to the different advertising headline and not due to a difference in your sales letter or traffic source.
Sometimes you’ll test elements of your web page, in which case you can use an A/B split test script to randomize your two different pages so that different visitors see these pages in equal amounts.
The point of testing is that you learn what works and what doesn’t. You can tweak poor-performers to bring them up to par so you aren’t wasting your advertising efforts. If you have consistent losers, discard them.
In the end, your income goes up because you know exactly what traffic sources, ads, and sales letters give you the best return on your investment. The next time you start a new ad campaign, you already have a good base to start with since you can model new campaigns based on past high-performing campaigns. And that’s an almost-invaluable piece of information!
